Posted: May 06, 2024On May 4, 2024, Société Générale, a French bank, made the decision to withdraw from the Ghanaian market after twenty years of operation. Alongside Ghana, the bank has also chosen to exit operations in two other African countries: Tunisia and Cameroon.
Société Générale initially entered the Ghanaian market in 2003 by acquiring a 51% stake in the then Social Security Bank. Over the past two decades, it has navigated the challenges faced by the financial sector, demonstrating resilience during its 20th-anniversary celebration last year. However, the bank has now decided to focus its resources on markets where it can establish itself as a leading financial institution, aligning with its overall strategy. Sources close to the bank reveal that Société Générale has enlisted the services of investment bank Lazard to seek potential buyers for its operations in Ghana, Cameroon, and Tunisia. Absa Bank is reportedly considering the acquisition of these subsidiaries. Weeks ago, Société Générale finalized agreements with Saham Group to sell its Moroccan operations, further streamlining its portfolio.

While Standard Chartered has withdrawn from some countries, it continues to maintain operations in Ghana and a few other African countries. Additionally, newer entrants like Atlas Mara have also left the continent, while Credit Suisse is retaining only its South African operation. French bank Groupe BPCE exited its non-core businesses in several African countries as far back as 2018. The departure of European banks from Africa, including Société Générale, is primarily attributed to the high cost-to-income ratio. These banks are fa

This unprecedented mission, set to provide valuable insights into geological and other differences between the less-explored far side and the better-known near side, represents a significant leap forward in our understanding of Earth’s celestial neighbor.
Read moreThe Chang’e Lunar Exploration Probe: Named after the Chinese mythical moon goddess, the Chang’e lunar exploration probe is at the heart of this mission. It builds upon China’s previous achievements, including landing a rover on the moon’s far side in 2019 – a historic feat that made China the first country to do so.
Ideal Conditions on the Far Side: The moon’s far side, also known as the dark side, remains shielded from Earth’s radio interference. As a result, it provides an excellent environment for radio astronomy and other scientific research. However, because it never faces Earth directly, a relay satellite is necessary to maintain communication with the probe.Sample Collection Process: The probe will orbit the moon to reduce its speed before the lander separates from the spacecraft. Once on the moon’s surface, it will begin scooping up samples almost immediately. Afterward, it will reconnect with the returner module for the journey back to Earth. The ent

Although the study is yet to undergo peer review, it represents a significant step toward future in-utero xenotransplantation in humans.
The researchers focused on a neonatal condition known as Potter sequence. This condition can occur when there isn’t enough amniotic fluid surrounding a developing fetus. Among the various symptoms associated with Potter sequence, kidney abnormalities are common. These abnormalities can lead to kidney disease or even prevent proper kidney development altogether. Babies born with severe kidney issues often don’t survive long enough to receive dialysis or other invasive treatments. Therefore, finding a way to address these kidney problems early is crucial.
Read moreThe study involved transplanting kidney tissue from one rat fetus to another. Here’s how the procedure unfolded:
- Donor Fetuses: The tiny kidneys were removed from donor rat fetuses.
- Recipient Fetuses: Pregnant rats were anesthetized, and their uteruses were carefully exposed. The kidneys were then injected through the uterine wall and placed approximately 5 millimeters under the skin of the recipient fetuses.
- Fluorescent Labeling: The donor kidneys were labeled with green fluorescent protein, allowing surgeons to verify successful tissue transfer.
Success Rate: The average success rate for the transplant was an impressive 88%. Of the nine fetuses transplanted, all but one showed evidence of the green fluorescent protein upon birth. - Kidney Development: The t
