Ghana’s Newly Imported Train Involved in Accident During Test Run

Ghana’s ambitious venture into modernizing its railway system recently encountered a setback when a newly imported train collided during a test run. The train, fresh from Poland, was intended to operate on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line. Unfortunately, the inaugural trial did not go as planned.

Around 12:10 pm on April 18, 2024, the train, part of the government’s efforts to boost rail transport, faced an unexpected obstacle. As it approached a curve at Km76+100 in the Asuogyaman District, disaster struck. A stationary vehicle had positioned itself directly across the rail track, catching the train off guard. Despite the immediate application of the emergency braking system, the train couldn’t halt in time, resulting in a collision with the unmanned vehicle.

Thankfully, no fatalities occurred. Passengers, crew members, and bystanders emerged unscathed. The Ministry of Railways Development emphasized that the location of the incident was not an authorized level crossing, and the vehicle was unmanned. Although the train’s driver’s cab section sustained minor damage, the passengers remained safe.

The incident was promptly reported to the police, who are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. The damaged train has been moved to the workshop for assessment and necessary repairs. The Ministry assured the public that safety remains their utmost priority, emphasizing adherence to safety protocols when operating or crossing railway tracks.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, the Minister of Railway Development, Peter Amewu, provided reassurance. Engineers are already working on repairing the train, which technically remains in good form. The electricals and engine remain undisturbed, and the insurance company is expected to expedite the restoration process.

Ghana procured two contemporary diesel-powered trains from Poland to enhance its railway transport system. The accident, while unfortunate, underscores the importance of rigorous testing and safety protocols. Community members were aware of the test run, and authorities are committed to ensuring the continued safe operation of the railway system.

As investigations continue, Ghana remains steadfast in its commitment to modernize its rail infrastructure, learning valuable lessons along the way. The collision serves as a reminder that progress comes with challenges, but with determination and vigilance, Ghana’s railway system will soon be on track to success.
