Samsung Quietly Launches 61.44TB SSD: A Data Center Powerhouse

Samsung, without much fanfare, has introduced its BM1743 solid-state drive (SSD), designed specifically for datacenter-grade read-intensive storage applications.

Key Specifications:

  • Capacity: The BM1743 boasts an astounding 61.44TB of storage space.
  • Performance: Leveraging PCIe 4.0/5.0 x4 interfaces, it offers a sustained sequential read speed of 7,200 MB/s and a sustained sequential write speed of 2,000 MB/s.
  • Random Performance: Up to 1.6 million 4K random reads and 110,000 4K random writes.
  • Endurance: With a write endurance of 0.26 drive writes per day, it’s optimized for ultra-high-density read-intensive tasks like AI inference and content delivery.
  • Form Factors: Available in both U.2 (for PCIe 4.0 x4 hosts) and E3.S (for PCIe 5.0 x4 hosts) form factors.

Samsung’s BM1743 faces limited competition. Only Solidigm (D5-P5336) and Western Digital (SN655) currently offer similar 61.44TB capacity SSDs with PCIe interfaces.
Other major players like Kioxia, Micron, and SK hynix are yet to introduce their 60TB-class SSDs, leaving Samsung, Solidigm, and Western Digital in a unique position.
While power consumption details remain undisclosed, the BM1743’s storage density makes it a compelling choice for data centers. Expect more innovation as Samsung also plans to develop a staggering 122.88TB SSD in the near future.
