The Birth of the English Football League: 136 Years Ago

On April 17, 1888, a historic moment unfolded in the world of football. It was a day that would forever change the landscape of the sport, laying the foundation for what would become a storied legacy. On that fateful day, the Football League was born.

The brainchild of William McGregor, a visionary director of Aston Villa, the Football League emerged as a response to the growing popularity of football across England. McGregor recognized the need for a structured and competitive league system that would elevate the game to new heights. And so, armed with determination and a vision, he penned a letter that would set the wheels in motion.

On March 2, 1888, five football clubs received a letter from McGregor. Little did they know that this correspondence would mark the birth of the world’s original league football competition. The letter outlined McGregor’s proposal for a league that would bring together clubs from across England and Wales, fostering fierce rivalries, thrilling matches, and passionate fan bases.

Just over a month later, on April 17, 1888, the Football League officially came into existence. Twelve pioneering clubs stepped onto the pitch, ready to etch their names into history. Among them were iconic names like Preston North End, Aston Villa, and Blackburn Rovers. The inaugural season was a testament to the league’s promise—a showcase of skill, determination, and unwavering commitment.

As the years passed, the Football League expanded. More divisions were added, and the number of clubs grew. By 1950, the league boasted 92 clubs, each vying for supremacy. Yet, financial considerations would soon alter its course.

In 1992, a seismic shift occurred. The leading clubs—the top 22—broke away from the Football League to form their own competition: the FA Premier League. This breakaway marked a turning point, as the Premier League became the pinnacle of English football. However, the Football League endured, adapting and evolving.

Today, the English Football League (EFL) stands as the oldest professional football league in the world. Rebranded from the original Football League in 2016, it comprises three divisions: the Championship, League One, and League Two. A total of 72 clubs—located in both England and Wales—battle for glory, with promotion and relegation shaping their destinies.

From McGregor’s letter to the modern-day clashes under floodlights, the EFL remains a testament to passion, tradition, and the beautiful game. As we celebrate 136 years since its inception, let us raise our imaginary scarves to the pioneers, the heroes, and the countless moments that define the English Football League.
